Abi Clarke
In the olden
days, i.e. In the early 2020s, comedians could have expected to play for years
in the UK before being invited onto a TV panel and selling out arena tours.
It's not so easy at the moment. One form of art that can still be performed
live is comedy, however there won't soon be any arena tour. One comedian from
Bristol is able to reach a large global audience through social media lockdown.
Abi Clarke didn't set out to become an internet celebrity. Abi Clarke, a
24-year-old living in Henbury with her parents, made her first online videos to
"build an audience of like-minded people who would appreciate my stand-up
comedy." "I performed a variety of shows in the middle of Devon for
men older than 50 who were not so keen on my Love Island, Sims and Twilight
references. I then went online with the intention of meeting other young women
who could relate to me." Abi has since been performing at Lakota Gardens
after locks have eased however she is still posting her videos on Instagram,
Twitter and Tik Tok (where she's recently surpassed more than 500,000
followers) In the process, she draws the inspiration she needs from sources as
diverse as her job at an establishment, a chat with a stranger or the girl
group chat, writing every thought down on her smartphone.
