Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a senior correspondent for The
Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also created and stars the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student, that debuted on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017.
Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. From
1989 until 1994, he lived in Manchester in New Hampshire. Chieng performed with
Trevor Noah in 2013 at the comedy festival in Melbourne, Australia. A few years
later Chieng was invited to be a candidate for the correspondent position for
The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. In July of 2016 Chieng was selected as one of
the top 10 comics to Check out by Variety In October, Chieng appeared on The
Daily Show to give his opinion on a Jesse Watters Fox News segment thought to
be racist by a large majority of viewers. Chieng made expletive-laden comments
about the segment from Fox News, a conservative network. Chieng also visited
the city's Chinatown in which Watters have mocked the residents and conducted
more respectful interviews in Mandarin as well as Cantonese. The viral video
garnered attention in Slate and the Washington Post. In his early years, Chieng
was an Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng has not been able to acquire citizenship or
permanent residence in Australia despite living in Australia for 10 years. In
2018, Chieng made a joke about being unfriendly during the Daily Show however,
he later , in an interview, he said that Chieng was "100 percent not afraid
of dogs".
